To reconcile the current incarnation of Brook Lopez with the version that starred for the Nets in his first several N.B.A. seasons is to truly understand the extent to which a player can evolve.
Lopez was everywhere for the Milwaukee Bucks in their 108-100 win over the Toronto Raptors in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals on Wednesday. Much was made of his 29 points and the reawakening of his 3-point shot, but he was just as vital on the defensive end, where he repeatedly got in the face of opposing shooters, holding players he guarded to 5 of 18 from the field while blocking four shots and grabbing 11 rebounds.
Lopez even found time to contribute to basketball’s social media culture with a spurt of clapping so enthusiastic that GIFs of the moment will undoubtedly have a long life online.
It added up to his spearheading a comeback win that preserved home court advantage on a night when the Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo, the presumptive favorite for the N.B.A.’s Most Valuable Player Award, had moments where he very nearly resembled a human being.
“This is the Brook we all know and we all love,” Antetokounmpo said after the game. “We just want him to be aggressive, especially in this series.”
[Does a guy working security in Milwaukee look familiar? He should. He used to play for the team.]
The talk before the series centered on Antetokounmpo, but if Toronto wants to get to the N.B.A. finals, a key element could be finding a way to handle Lopez, even if that means sitting one of its solid big men in favor of a smaller, faster lineup to try to run him off the floor.
Lopez’s career path has been anything but straight. Now in his 11th season, the slow-footed center was once written off as an effective scorer in the paint who offered little other value to the Nets, who took him out of the Stanford with the 10th overall pick in the 2008 draft.
He couldn’t rebound despite being 7 feet tall, he routinely had poor ratings in advanced defensive statistics, and he was not exactly stretching the floor. Over his first eight seasons the average distance on his field-goal attempts was just 7.5 feet, according to Basketball Reference’s play-by-play data.
The evolution of Lopez’s game, though, has made him the world’s most unlikely catch-and-shoot 3-point specialist — the average distance of his field-goal attempts is up to 19.2 feet this season — and perhaps the league’s most underrated rim protector, with numbers suggesting he affects the game on a level akin to Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid and Utah’s Rudy Gobert.
Lopez’s 3-pointers have gotten most of the attention, but while his shot comes and goes, as evidenced by how quiet he was offensively in the first two playoff rounds, his defense is stunningly consistent. With 2.3 blocks a game in the playoffs, he trails only Gobert, and that measure almost underrates how disruptive Lopez can be, because he routinely gets his huge frame in the face of opposing shooters, both in the paint and along the perimeter.
In the playoffs so far, Lopez is contesting an N.B.A.-high 17.6 shots a game, after leading the league in the regular season with 19.6 a game. Opponents are clearly struggling to shoot past him: Lopez has held them to a field-goal percentage of just 35.7 — fourth-best among players who defend 10 or more shots a game.
You would think moving him away from the basket would reduce that impact, but while guarding an average of three 3-point attempts per game in the playoffs, he has held opponents to 29.4 percent shooting. That puts him in line with faster wing players like Toronto’s Danny Green and Boston’s Jayson Tatum.
On the other end of the court, the Raptors repeatedly had their best defensive center, Marc Gasol, shift off Lopez to try to help stop Antetokounmpo inside, leaving Lopez alone along the perimeter. He proceeded to shoot 4 of 11 from 3-point range.
His high release point makes the shots so hard to contest that Toronto is left with the terrible options of leaving Lopez open outside or not having Gasol roll in to help with Antetokounmpo inside. (Good luck with that.)
After Game 1, Antetokounmpo seemed to have an idea which decision the Raptors would make, and he believes Lopez can make them pay for it even more than he did in Game 1.
“He is going to be wide open most of the time,” Antetokounmpo said. “He's going to knock down shots like he did tonight. And especially when he's going, we've got to find him even more and more and more.”B:
